Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction By William D., Jr. Callister 7edtion

Publisher:   Wiley
Number Of Pages:   832
Publication Date:   2006-02-17
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   0471736961
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9780471736967
Binding:   Hardcover

Building on the extraordinary success of six best-selling editions, Bill Callister's new Seventh Edition of MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING: AN INTRODUCTION continues to promote student understanding of the three primary types of materials (metals, ceramics, and polymers) and composites, as well as the relationships that exist between the structural elements of materials and their properties.

Summary: Perfect...
Rating: 5
Great book...does a good job of deriving things from first principles. Excellent reference, everything is well-organized. One minor complaint: I wish that the section on analyzing phase diagrams with the lever rule came with a few more examples and better explanations. For that, if I could, I would dock a quarter of a star.

Summary: Good book, though much overpriced
Rating: 4
The quality of Callister's educational approach on basic Materials Science is out of question. His long time experience in the area is reflected by the success of the prior editions of this book. As Materials Science evolves quite fast -almost day by day- textbooks need to adapt. In this respect, Callister has demonstrated to be on top of the wake always.
My concerns arise when I compare this edition with the prior one and find very few enhancements in terms of the text itself. The only noticeable aspect in the printed edition is the use of more colors in the graphs. The publisher (Wiley) tries to justify the steep price of this book by placing online additional perks for educators and students. Honestly, although I may sound "old-schoolish," I believe that all that is unnecessary and cannot justify overpricing this resource.
As a college professor of a minority school, I do not feel fine by requiring this expensive book to my students. Yes, it can -in time- become a reference for the students; but then, as a reference, the web perks will become unusable since Wiley will keep changing them with newer editions. Most likely, due to its price, most of the students will try to sell their copies. Indeed, they will realize that there are better "reference" texts than this one.

Summary: Great Tool
Rating: 4
Great introductory book. It built upon many of the concepts I had learned in my General Chemistry couses. Having previously worked in metal fabrication, I now learned what the metal specification numbers meant and why some types of metals are harder or softer than others.

Summary: Very easy to understand
Rating: 4
Although i found it to be mundane at times, it was a great book when it came to teaching the material. the examples are made very clear and the text cleanly explains anything that you may find confusing. very highly recommended

Summary: an introduction
Rating: 5
The depth, clarity with which he surveys materials science concepts will make this text indispensable for both studying and practicing engineers for years to come. Without a doubt, this is one of the most well written textbooks I have ever had the pleasure of reading. All the figures are well drawn, the green fonts here and there seem quiet. All the tough theories, concepts just jump out of the line and hit my forehead.

Mechanical Behavior of Materials by William F. Hosford

Product DescriptionThis textbook is for courses on Mechanical Behavior of Materials taught in departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. The text includes numerous examples and problems for student practice. The book emphasizes quantitative problem solving. End of the chapter notes are included to increase students' interest. This text differs from others because the treatment of plasticity has greater emphasis on the interrelationship of the flow, effective strain and effective stress and their use in conjunction with yield criteria to solve problems.
The treatment of defects is new. Schmid's law is generalized for complex stress states. Its use with strains allows for prediction of R-values for textures. Another feature is the treatment of lattice rotations and how they lead to deformation textures. The chapter on fracture mechanics includes coverage of Gurney's approach. Much of the analysis of particulate composites is new. Few texts include anything on metal forming. Book DescriptionThis text for courses on Mechanical Behavior of Materials in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, includes numerous examples and problems and emphasizes quantitative problem solving. It considers numerous topics including mechanical testing to determine material properties, plasticity for FEM analyses, means of altering mechanical properties and several modes of failure.

Mechanical Behavior of Materials by Marc André Meyers, Krishan Kumar Chawla

880 pages | Cambridge University Press; 2 edition (December 8, 2008) | ISBN-10: 0521866758 | PDF | 15 Mb
A balanced mechanics-materials approach and coverage of the latest developments in biomaterials and electronic materials, the new edition of this popular text is the most thorough and modern book available for upper-level undergraduate courses on the mechanical behavior of materials.
To ensure that the student gains a thorough understanding the authors present the fundamental mechanisms that operate at micro- and nano-meter level across a wide-range of materials, in a way that is mathematically simple and requires no extensive knowledge of materials. This integrated approach provides a conceptual presentation that shows how the microstructure of a material controls its mechanical behavior, and this is reinforced through extensive use of micrographs and illustrations. New worked examples and exercises help the student test their understanding.

Analysis, Synthesis, and Design of Chemical Processes by Richard Turton,Richard C. Bailie,Wallace B. Whiting and Joseph A. Shaeiwitz

Appropriate for all courses in chemical engineering process design.Analysis, Synthesis and Design of Chemical Processes, Second Edition moves chemical engineering students beyond neatly delineated classroom exercises and into the world of solving the open-ended process problems they will see in practice. The authors accomplish this by emphasizing design synthesis of the entire process-from equipment sizing to optimization, finances to operation. Drawing on over 30 years of teachingchemical engineering process design, they present design as a creative process that integrates the big picture with the small details, and relies on knowing which to stress, and why.
They show students how to apply key process design techniques to every aspect of the discipline, from the conceptual design of a plant to improving an existing process. This edition has been updated throughout, and contains extensive new coverage of environmental, health, and safety issues, green engineering, and engineering ethics. Coverage also includes: evolution and generation of multiple process configurations; estimating capital investment, manufacturing cost, and other economic factors; synthesis and optimization of chemical processes; performance analysis of existing processes and equipment; and more. The authors provide suggested curricula for both single-semester and year-long design courses, case studies and design projects with practical applications, and appendices with current equipment cost data and preliminary design information for four chemical processes. The accompanying CD-ROM contains powerful tools for helping students master chemical process design, including a thoroughly revised version of CAPCOST for evaluating fixed capital investments and full process economics; HENSAD for planning temperatures and heat exchange; a virtual plant tour of a simple chemical process; and additional student design projects.Download

Chemistry 7th Edition ~ By John E. Mcmurry

Chemistry 7th Edition ~ By John E. Mcmurry

Review
“McMurry’s greatest strength to this reviewer is the level of presentation, the emphasis on physical principles. I think the questions in McMurry both in text and end of chapter are excellent.”
“The material has a far greater biological focus, which is done successfully. This is a big plus in my mind. . . . the chemistry is presented with a high degree of accuracy. There are certainly no major problems.”
“The chapter problems are excellent and challenge students at many levels. Chapter summaries are well written. The ’Why This Chapter’ lead-ins are superb.”
“The author has always produced a well written book that is easy to read. That is a comment I have heard from both other colleagues and students alike. This has always been a general strength of the text. I was happy to see the inclusion of the ’Focus On’ topics as supplements to the chapter’s material to excite the students about other topics in organic chemistry related to the chapter material. I think these are quite informative for the students.”
“We have been using McMurry’s text for the past several years here at UA, and I am, therefore, quite familiar with it. The general strengths include the readability and a wealth of good problems.”
Product Description
Succeed in your course with the help of this proven best-seller! John McMurry’s ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is consistently praised as the most clearly written book available for the course. In John McMurry’s words: “I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words.” Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works!
