Industrial Machinery Repair: Best Maintenance Practices Pocket Guide (Plant Engineering) by Ricky Smith ,R. Keith Mobley President and CEO of Integrated Systems Inc
techniques in “Best Maintenance Practices—Mechanical.”
If these principles and techniques are followed, they will result in a serious
reduction in “self-induced failures.” This book is a tool that should be carried
and referenced by all mechanical maintenance personnel.
A number of surveys conducted in industries throughout the United States
have found that 70% of equipment failures are self-induced.
Maintenance personnel who are not following what are termed “Best
Maintenance Repair Practices” substantially affect these failures. Between
30% and 50% of the self-induced failures are the result of maintenance
personnel not knowing the basics of maintenance. Maintenance personnel
who, although skilled, choose not to follow best maintenance repair practices
potentially cause another 20% to 30% of those failures. The existence
of this problem has been further validated through the skills assessment
process performed in companies throughout the state of Georgia. This program
evaluated the knowledge of basic maintenance fundamentals through
a combination of written, identification, and performance assessments of
thousands of maintenance personnel from a wide variety of industries.
The results indicated that over 90% lacked complete basic fundamentals
of mechanical maintenance. This book focuses on the “Best Maintenance
Repair Practices” necessary for maintenance personnel to keep equipment
operating at peak reliability and companies functioning more profitably
through reduced maintenance costs and increased productivity and
capacity.

"The one and only reason to go lean is to make more money", says Bill Carreira. Lean Manufacturing That Works is the first book to bring all the principles of lean manufacturing to where they're needed most: the shop floor and the people supervising daily operations. Engagingly written and easy to put to work, the book features essential tools that can help streamline operations in any manufacturing environment.Section 1 presents a thorough overview of lean, with discussions of: cost and cash flow; velocity and lead time; what waste is and how it affects both profit and customer satisfaction; how to quantify opportunities to become more profitable; and how to use lean manufacturing to both complement and implement business strategy.Section 2 gives step-by-step, dollar-by-dollar guidance on creating a lean process at virtually any manufacturing company, from laying out processes to transitioning and training employees. There is also valuable insight on establishing metrics and ensuring continuous improvement. Gaining specific, practical knowledge with every page, the reader will move effortlessly through the book and return to the shop floor with a workable plan for cutting waste and boosting profits.

Book Description:
Process Control Performance Assessment is a practical guide to the application of control benchmarking to real, complex, industrial processes. It presents commercial solutions as well as current and future techniques still under development and contains real full-scale-implementation industrial case studies from the oil and gas, power and chemical industries providing a hierarchical perspective on benchmarks. The effect of benchmarking and control tuning on process performance and revenue optimisation is demonstrated.
The most frequently occurring practical issues associated with implementing benchmarking algorithms in industrial processes are discussed in detailed and concise terms and guidelines given for avoiding common problems. The impact of problems like valve stiction and plant-wide disturbances on process performance is reviewed and methods for diagnosing causative fault conditions suggested.
The benefit of non-intrusive and intrusive benchmarking techniques for optimising control systems using performance assessment and diagnostic tools is the potential to enhance company operational economics through increased throughput and better product quality. The book is appropriate for industrial and academic control and process engineers who wish to learn about methods of benchmarking through directed study or self study.

Essentials of Total Quality Management (Worksmart Series)
By Richard L. Williams
Summary: Too simple
Rating: 4
I've generally found AMACOM books to be very good. This is a good book, just very simple, as I suspect are all of the books in the WorkSmart series (I've read 3). You can read this completely in one evening.
If you've never heard of TQM, this book will have some value to you. If you've read anything on TQM, you have probably covered most of what's in this book. A good "second" book, that you can read in place of this or following, is "Principles and Practices of Organizational Performance Excellence", by Thomas Cartin, an excellent book.
Summary: TQM made simple!!
Rating: 5
Dr. Williams' approach to the concepts of TQM are easy to understand and simple to follow. I couldn't put the book down. I've passed out many copies to business associates and friends. This book should be on EVERY executives desk!!

An Introduction to the Petroleum Industry
Oil, petroleum, natural gas, hydrocarbons and crude are terms we commonly hear. If we are going to study the oil industry, we must first become familiar with the “lingo”. Appendix I provides a glossary, but it will be useful at this point to introduce you to the some of the key terms.
